I just read a column by Ruben Navarrette Jr. in which he asks, “Who will pick our fruit?” His basic point is that we need illegal immigrants to work for farmers and the like, because nobody else will.
He makes an offhand remark about prisoners doing these jobs,
Some farmers in Colorado and Idaho have turned to prison [...]

Thousands of illegal immigrants and “their supporters” were out all over the place yesterday. Why weren’t they thrown in jail? If rapists and their supporters held a rally, I’m sure they’d be arrested and thrown [...]
I have nothing against immigration. Immigration is the reason I live in this great country. One of my best friends is an immigrant. I’m all for immigration. My problem lies with illegal immigration. I do not approve of criminal aliens who sneak into this country and show no respect for what it means to live [...]
